Subaru are celebrating after being recognised in the International Engine of the Year awards for their popular 2.5-litre Boxer unit.

Triumphing in the 2.0-litre to 2.5-litre category, the four-cylinder engine has been well received over time for its use in a variety of Subaru models, but it is the latest evolution that beat off stiff opposition from rivals including BMW, Mercedes and Audi.

Praised for its driveability, refinement and performance, the Japanese manufacturer was one of five different winners across eleven categories on the night and comes as Subaru launch the first ever Boxer configured diesel powerplant.

Its use in the new Impreza STi was singled out by the judges: “Subaru’s victory was no doubt helped by the engine’s boost in power when housed in the Impreza STi – from 277bhp to 320bhp – but judges were equally impressed with the performance of the 2.5-litre turbo in the Forester, where it pushes out a mere 230bhp.” The engine is currently available in the UK with the Impreza, Legacy and recently unveiled Forester SUV.
